Holidays in Ariège

Spending your holidays in Ariège means choosing the authentic and the wild. Ariège is still not very well known, even if more and more people are managing to place it on the map today. In the heart of the Pyrenees, 1 hour south of Toulouse, 1 hour from the principality of Andorra, the department offers, in a word, a change of scenery for the traveler.

Nature et sauvage : prendre le temps de vivre!

Ariège is vast and rich in landscapes. For that alone, it's worth spending your vacation there. Part of the territory is registered in the Pyrénées Ariégeoises Regional Natural Park. We're going to focus on this part of the department. It's a real breath of fresh air and greenery as well as majestic and wild mountains. Here, time has stopped, the geological strata put you back in your place and you feel small. It's these mountains covered in dense forest and with bare peaks that make the charm of the Vicdessos valley.

Que faire pendant ses vacances en Ariège ?

Ariège is a region full of history but also activities. Water, air, fire, there is something for everyone. Welcome to the paradise of nature sports, for beginners and experienced athletes alike.

Hiking

For lovers of nature and freedom, you are in the right place. There are so many hiking trails in the Vicdessos Valley that we have stopped trying to count them. You have two mythical Ariège summits within reach: the Pic du Montcalm at an altitude of 3077 meters and the Pic des Trois Seigneurs at an altitude of 2199 meters. In other words, you can hike all summer in the valley without doing the same hike twice. Guaranteed! You will find many places along the way to take a dip or install a barbecue grill.

Paragliding

Why not take advantage of your holidays in Ariège to try one of the many activities offered in the Vicdessos valley? Try something new, you have the choice. Kymaya Parapente offers you paragliding baptisms facing the mountains of Ariège. You fly to the magnificent site of Port de Lers. This is a paragliding school that we know well at Spéléo Canyon Ariège. The founders Franck and Hélio were part of the first aerial reconnaissance expeditions in the Himalayas before drones were invented. The entire team is made up of solid professionals who have proven themselves. They also offer autonomy training to "fly on your own" as well as accompanied trips to go flying in superb sites around the world.

Canyoning

At Spéléo Canyon Ariège, we invite you to discover several facets of canyoning. We are of course talking about initiation with canyons like Marc or l’Artigue but above all autonomy. For us, the most important thing is that you are the actors of your descent. We don't take you for a walk in the canyons, you are the one who goes on an adventure to take full advantage of the experience and surpass yourself. We have seen it over the years, people come back because we offer you to progress through our different canyons. It is possible to start with half-day beginners to finish with the largest canyon in Ariège; the canyon d’Estat. For canyoning enthusiasts, we also offer autonomy training, not to mention that there are training courses at higher levels to perfect the art of canyoning.

Caving

Try caving to cool off. It is an activity that is rich in lessons for adults and children alike. In Ariège, we are lucky to have many quite different caves. It is therefore possible to do introduction with the family, for example in the Siech cave to start gently horizontally. You can discover a slightly more sporty activity thanks to the Vicdessos underground canyon and its few meters of rope wells. For those initiated to abseiling, the George chasm is more adventurous and committed. A beautiful descent that can go up to -700 meters and which also includes a beautiful ascent!

Rafting

Rafting and hydrospeed are activities that require a beautiful, slightly choppy river. That's why we're sending you to the Oxygen Aventure base in Belvianes and Cavirac in the Aude. The scenery is worth the detour. In the superb Saint Georges gorges, you can try your hand at rafting or hydrospeed. Oxygen Aventure shares with us the desire to pass on their knowledge and passion to you. An activity masterfully supervised by Agathe who will also make this moment a great team effort on board.

Where to stay during your holidays in Ariège?

To fully enjoy the Vicdessos Valley and all its activities that have been described above, you must not be too far away. However, you have to stay close to Tarascon sur Ariège to have access to shops, the market and traditional restaurants like Le Vieux Carré. Ariège is rich in heritage, you can visit the Prehistoric Park, the Foix Castle or the House of Wolves. Not to mention the Naux Cave and the possibility of making a round trip to Andorra. Which gives us a lot of parameters. We found the solution.

"Bien Être Miglos"

Avec "Bien Être Miglos", vous avez le lieu pour passer vos vacances en Ariège tranquille. Avec sa situation centrale, les gîtes et chambres de "Bien Être Miglos" vous permettent tout d’abord de faire toutes les activités de la vallée de Vicdessos et d’aller visiter les différents sites d’Ariège. En bref s’il y a bien un endroit qu’on recommande pour que vous passiez de bonnes vacances, c’est à "Bien Être Miglos".

In short, to have a good holiday in Ariège, you have to manage to do a mix of all that. A bit of barbecue, a bit of activities, a bit of hiking and above all take your time. Holidays are made to relax and enjoy so don't hesitate any longer and come and see us.

Chamjesk Adventure

The Chamjesk Adventure, a 3-day advanced canyoning course

A “Chamjesk Adventure”? Ok, but what does “Chamjesk” mean?

10 years ago, the Himalayan Canyon Team led by Rod Sturm, opened the way by descending for the first time "the biggest canyon in the world" at the foot of the Annapurnas (Nepal). The opening of this legendary canyon, named Chamje Khola (V7.A7.Ex), required the 11 participants more than 2 years of preparation, and the development of specific vertical progression techniques in "explo" mode, then 2 days of approach for 3 days of descent (2300m of vertical drop) to achieve this feat.

Today, the team of Speleo Canyon Ariege, led by Rod since 2004, after more than a year of reflection, prospecting and development of equipment is finally ready to welcome its trainees to give them a similar experience, adapted to their level.

Why such a professional approach? Why make the leap from an “associative and voluntary” adventure to the design of a commercial “product”?

Nowadays, the time for environmental waste is over, we all know that. And making an audience dream of adventure when they will have less and less chance of experiencing their own seems illusory and unfair. For the leader of Himalayan Canyon Team, only "Grey & light" expeditions and projects are still viable...

Rod with the team of Speleo Canyon Ariege decided to limit long trips and distant expeditions to refocus on the natural potential near their canyoning training center in Niaux, Ariège.

Thus, a mini-expedition in “Chamjesk” mode for an audience close to the Pyrenees seems much more coherent in order to allow initiated canyoners to live their dream of adventure, to share an experience with one of the pillars of the development and opening of international canyoning.

How can we share these extraordinary adventures with mountain activity lovers without going to the ends of the earth?

Rod and his team have imagined and developed a 3-day "combo" in the heart of the Ariège Pyrenees based on the model of the opening of Chamje Khola, aimed at amateur canyoners of all levels, in order to introduce them to the confidential world of canyon exploration through a unique program in the world. A great sporting challenge, respecting the environment, including two bivouacs, and reinforced by a specific educational program. This canyon improvement course will allow participants to train, perfect their canyoning autonomy techniques, strengthen their safety in practice, and finally, learn more and more... And it is certain that Arthur's photos will be circulating on the web for a long time to make more than one dream!

So what is the goal of this “Chamjesk Adventure”?

Linking three of the most beautiful and largest canyons in Ariège (Subra + Estat intégrale + Artigue), totaling more than 1000 meters of descent, and requiring two bivouacs, trained and supervised by Rod himself assisted by his essential photographer, Arthur Serres..

In order to descend safely, Rod, who alone will be able to supervise this advanced canyoning course, will teach trainees new exclusive techniques for descending large canyons and numerous tips to help them improve their autonomy in the activity.

The internship program will therefore include the preparation of this mini-expedition and training in the basics of information collection allowing the smooth running of such a challenge. A private screening of the 52mn HD film by Chamje Khola for a better understanding of the issues and to sharpen everyone's motivation.

Thus, prepared and trained, the small team of 6 trainees maximum will be ready for theaventure et l’exploration.

The activity will begin on the first day with the descent of the Canyon de Subra (V3.A2.III), including training in autonomous and team progression techniques and training in de-equipment techniques. Participants will be introduced to the specificities of the expedition (safety, reading, communication, efficiency, speed, equipment, etc.). Then in the evening, a comfortable bivouac at the foot of the canyon will allow you to recharge your batteries.

The next day, after a long approach walk of almost 3 hours, the highlight of the show will take place. The descent of the Canyon d’Estat intégrale (V4.A3.IV) which has never been descended with “clients” because it is a long descent of more than 700m of elevation gain, requiring technique and endurance. Improvement in the techniques of progression in autonomy and in a team will therefore be essential in order to progress quickly and safely. All this is completed by training in the techniques of de-equipment and optimization of the “expedition mode” (safety and mutual assistance of pairs, efficiency and speed, “light technique” and equipment, etc.). In the evening, at the exit of the canyon, the 5-star Chamjesk bivouac will take place: unforgettable!!!

Then on the third day, after a short transition walk, the descent of the Canyon de l’Artigue (V3.A3.III), much more aquatic than the two previous canyons, will allow a complete wash of the whole team. The Artigue is a classic in Ariège, and in order to bring something new to the participants already familiar with this superb canyon, the objective will be to progress independently and as a team with the assistance of Rod. Training in aquatic progression techniques (reading and analyzing obstacles, helping pairs and making decisions, anticipation, jumps, fun and safety, etc.) will allow team members to descend this canyon almost alone – And for those who want more, the (optional) link-up with the little Marc canyon (V3.A3.II) will be the icing on the cake!

Rafting with our partner Oxygen Aventure

A rafting session with our partner Oxygen Aventure

We woke up early with my friend Yann for our rafting session, we had a coffee at the PMU in Saint Paul de Fenouillet and we hit the road towards Cavirac. There, in the Oxygène Aventure rafting base, we found Agathe. She was accompanied by a small family, a dad and his two daughters. This was our group for the morning. Agathe gave us our equipment; wetsuits, helmets and shoes, with a magnificent life jacket as a bonus. We all loaded the boat onto a trailer and settled into the van that was towing it. We hit the road to go back up the route that we would do later a little further down the river. When we arrived at the starting point, we unloaded the raft. It’s a big inflatable boat, in the middle there are two big tubes that hold everything together and on the ground there are things to put your feet on. Before putting it in the water, we organized the placement. Yann and I were at the front, the two girls behind us and at the end were the dad and Agathe at the end to maneuver the boat. Very good. Agathe gave us a briefing on the paddles and how to use them to be efficient. Above all, we had to be well coordinated in all the movements. She showed us how to position ourselves when she said “safety!” and what the main instructions she was going to give us would be. Sometimes only the right side would paddle, sometimes the right forward, the left backward, raise the paddles. It was better to be awake! A demonstration of how to get someone back on board the boat was given and then we got into the water.

rafting oxygen aventure

The start of the descent was very wild, in the middle of the river, between the trees, in a magnificent gorge. The first small rapids got us into the swing of things. Agathe then explained to us that we were going to do a 360. Ha… To do that, you had to go straight ahead onto a rock, hit it head-on and with the current the boat would turn around. The first time, it was strange, you mustn’t stop paddling when the rock is very close, the idea seems crazy. But the effect is effective, the boat bounces on the rock, we tighten up all over to stay on board and after a complete turn we find ourselves in the right direction of the current. The captain knew what she was doing. It became calmer and it was an opportunity to practice fishing someone out of the water. To do that, you had to go into this cool liquid at this early hour. I was chosen, as an Ariégeois who wasn’t afraid of cold water, to start the exercise. It was cold but it was fun to play at fishing yourself out of the water. Yann and I laughed like children, trying to recreate scenes from Titanic. We continued on the river, calmer moments alternated with small rapids and 360s hitting rocks. Which is very funny but we wondered after a while. Why all these 360s? Was it because the captain was laughing while doing that? In fact, she explained to us that it was to prepare for the slightly bigger rapids at the end. That way we at least had the experience of the boat hitting the rocks and we wouldn’t be surprised. It made sense!

rafting rivière sourire oxygen aventure

Between two trees stood out the mountains, the setting was superb, contemplative moments specific to nature lovers. Agathe told us a thousand things about the ecosystem of the river. A bird that flew low over the water in front of us was in fact a dipper that could dive into the river and walk underwater! The water was becoming cloudy because of the storms of the day before and a tributary that came from the Sault region, one of the watersheds of the Pyrenees. The Aude was going to flow into the Mediterranean and the Garonne into the Atlantic Ocean. We passed villages on the banks of the river with houses quietly wedged in lawns on the beach. The bridges of the old railway line passed over our heads. At times, it was like being in the Jungle Book. Yann wanted to see Bagueera but I told him he had a better chance of meeting Balou.

rafting oxygen aventure

We stopped to take a little jump in the river, Agathe asked us if we wanted to make a "crêpe", we said yes. "Crêpe" is the act of turning the raft over. Of course it was intentional, we all had to be on one side of the boat and Agathe insisted on resisting and not jumping into the water before the boat turned over. Okay, okay, with Yann we sang "resist, prove that you exist" while waiting for the moment to come. "Everyone to the left" shouted Agathe and Yann threw himself on my knees but we barely had time to understand what was happening before we were in the water, holding the paddle as best we could, Yann's face in front of mine, we got our heads out of the water and we laughed. It happens quickly when a raft turns over! We did a "surf" session, trying to keep the raft facing a small waterfall, a very beautiful moment too, the water was spraying in all directions, we took it full in the face with Yann pushing on the paddles to keep everything going in big bursts of laughter. Real kids!

oxygen aventure rapides rafting

In the gorge, great climbing routes stood on sumptuous peaks, the sky was blue, the birds were chirping. We put our paddles on the side of the raft and looked with wide eyes at the mysteries of Mother Nature. Up there, huge vultures were flying in circles in the blue of the sky. Then Agathe told us that we were reaching the end of the course, in the slightly more serious rapids. In one of them, after touching the rock, we had to get into the "safety" position. The water was flowing in big bubbles, waves were forming between the rocks, we must not have taken the right path, Agathe shouted "Safety" and we found ourselves with Yann sitting side by side with the oar in the air saying "whoa fuck" when the raft took a nice descent between two rocks. I didn't remember all the names of the rapids but the last one I did; "the dessert". Agathe explains the procedure to us a little, we go, "left forward", "everyone forward, go!", we paddle like crazy but it bubbles and goes down, we feel like we're paddling in the void, then the boat takes off, turns, we paddle, a movement of water and there I am, nose in the water and foot hanging on the raft! Yann laughs and pulls me out of the water, the dad has fallen in the water too, immediately rescued by Agathe. It was the last rapid, we continue to slide on the river, in what could look like mangroves. We arrived at the base of Cavirac, we had to go back up the boat and it was all smiles that our little group enjoyed a mint in water around a table.

I would say that rafting is a super nice, fun, sporty activity where you can take the time to admire nature but it is above all a return to childhood! If you also want to play in the water with Oxygen Aventure, take a look at their site: www.oxygen-aventure.com/rafting-pyrenees-aude/

Discover climbing in Ariège

Climbing in Ariège

Climbing, climbing rocks is an activity that may seem impressive and yet accessible to everyone!

escalade auzat

In this short text, I will tell you how I discovered climbing and why I came to settle in Ariège, this beautiful Pyrenean department.

I spent my childhood not far from the Pyrenees mountains, near the Aspe and Ossau valley.

When I was little, I often went hiking with my parents, and as soon as we came across a piece of rock, I had to climb on it. My father showed me some basic climbing skills, and we loved going down streams by jumping from rock to rock. I think that all those moments spent in the mountains stimulated my desire to really learn to climb.

Bloc escalade spéléo canyon ariege

I decided to join a climbing and mountain club. There, I met one of my future best friends, who was a climbing instructor, and who passed on his passion for climbing to me!

So, he taught me all the techniques to climb "in lead" and become independent. We would train two to three times a week in the climbing gym or on the cliffs nearby.

We regularly went away for weekends to discover new climbing spots, new rocks each with their own atmosphere and very beautiful landscapes, especially in Spain which was not very far from my home.

After a few years of practice, I decided to get my state diploma to become an instructor in my turn.

I had heard about Ariège through my encounters, its nature and its wild side and the many shaded cliffs, I was told that it was the 5th French department in terms of the number of climbing routes! A beautiful playground in short!

escalade ariege

There is something for everyone!

- "Bouldering", a sort of large rocks (less than 4m high), which can be found in 2 sectors (Laramade in Vicdessos and Orlu in the Ax valleys).

- "Couennes", which are cliffs of a rope length (generally less than 30m high). They are everywhere! The great classics are: Calamès (near Tarascon sur Ariège), all the spots in the Vicdessos valley (and there are a lot of them), but also in the Ax valleys etc...

- And "grandes voies", cliffs with several rope lengths that can measure from 50m to more than 1000m high in our area. The two places renowned for their beauty and style are the Quiés de Sinsat and the Dent d’Orlu.

I quickly met a whole group of friends who were thirsty for climbing and who spent most of their lives climbing! An ideal that seemed pretty good to me!

escalade ariege

Now, as a professional, I am passing on my passion. Settling in the Tarascon region, halfway between the different sites, allows me to easily help you discover the joys of verticality!

If you come with your family, we will go and discover the boulder. Easier to learn the gestures and balance necessary to be comfortable, the other advantage is that you can try the different passages as many times as you want. In addition, it is easy to secure the climber thanks to "crash pads" (reception mattresses) and a good "parade" (techniques to accompany the fall of the climber). So young and old can share a good moment of climbing on these big rocks scattered under the cool of the forest!

decouvrir escalade ariege

The school cliff, is the ideal place to familiarize yourself with the height and the necessary safety techniques. You can come with friends and we will learn how to use the equipment (harness, rope, carabiners, belayer, etc.) so that everyone feels comfortable. It is possible to climb at different levels, beginner or athlete who has already practiced, the pleasure is shared as a team! What a joy to become one with the rock and climb, to succeed in finding the balance, the right movement that will allow us to climb to the top of the wall!

The big route is a step towards mountaineering, the goal is to climb high cliffs of several hundred meters! Reserved for people who already have climbing experience, this practice remains accessible to all climbers who want to climb summits! To do this we will have to learn rope techniques, where the climber becomes the belayer and the belayer becomes the climber at each relay. Here, the feeling of height is increased tenfold, in Ariège it is possible to learn the big route on the cliffs of Calamès and Roche Ronde (about 150m high)! A great adventure in perspective!

As you can see, climbing is an activity accessible to everyone! You just have to take the plunge!

Denis recently joined our list of partners. The alchemy happened very quickly and naturally. He offers to discover the mountain on two wheels. Through his structure Trott'e Occitanie, Denis welcomes you to the Goulier Neige resort to take you off the beaten track of this mountain that he knows so well. On his electric scooters, he takes you on an unusual adventure.

The machine is already surprising, "it climbs trees" as they say around here. The engines of this super scooter obey the fingers and the eye, we stroll in the middle of the mountains without too much effort. Denis offers several circuits, from quiet family discovery to extreme stuntman version mountain trails. What we like about him is that he is passionate about what he does. The mountain is his element and he likes to share it with you. It's not about dragging you through the tracks and paths but rather talking to you about what makes Ariège; its flowers and its trees, its stories and its ancestors, its peaks and its ports. We leave his place rinsed by adventure and our heads full of new things.

Agathe is in charge of this part and we can say that the captain knows what she's doing. Initiations and discoveries or thrills, it's in Belvianes-et-Cavirac that it happens. There is the Oxygen Aventure whitewater base. We go down the Aude in superb landscapes, moments of tranquility and contemplation alternate with adrenaline rushes, the session is magnificently well constructed and Agathe accompanies you in the sporty discovery of this beautiful river. A sporty discovery day at the Artigue canyon

L’Artigue, an ideal canyon for sporting discovery

The Artigue canyon is the big brother of the canyons in the Vicdessos valley. It is the most fun and the richest in obstacles.

canyon artigue bassies speleo canyon ariege

We start the day with a coffee, because without coffee it's not the same. The reception takes place at the Niaux canyon center. Around the table in the garden, the participants meet. Rod details the day's program. We start with individual equipment, everyone receives their equipment; socks, shoes, wetsuit, harness, helmet. We make a backpack with everything that we call a "turtle". We pack everyone's picnic, we check that we haven't forgotten anything. We put everything in the truck. We're off for a short drive to the Artigue car park.

From the car park, the approach walk is superb. It starts off a bit steep and then opens up onto the Montcalm massif. In front of us stands the Pic d'Estat and the canyon of the same name. In the middle of the mountains, we frolic with our turtles on our backs. This is the beginning of the adventure. We are in the heart of the Ariège Pyrenees, in the middle of nowhere. Civilisation gradually fades away, giving way to the wild nature of the peaks. We arrive behind the Bassiès cirque and its red peak. This is "the restaurant room", the picnic area, facing the mountains. Already there, we have worked up a good sweat and are happy to eat a bite.

After a complete briefing on communication, canyoning and abseiling and jumping techniques, knowing that jumps are never mandatory, we begin the descent. The Artigue is a progressive canyon. The first part, open to the peaks, allows you to admire the surroundings while getting into the swing of the activity. A first small jump, short slides, we dip ourselves in the water, we're there. The obstacles follow one after the other, it's sporty, we jump five meters, we do dry abseiling, abseiling in the waterfall, we pass the big slide.

Already the configuration of the canyon has changed, it becomes more steep, the vegetation is rarer, we feel that we are touching the heart of the canyoning activity. In a bend, the landscape appears, dazzling. We quickly understand that there is only one way to access this very special place; by practicing canyoning. While we have already taken in the view, comes the big jump, possible up to ten meters. Adrenaline rush obliges, we do not jump ten meters every day. This is where the canyoner learns that sometimes you have to know how to give up jumping the obstacle.

We arrive at the large twenty-meter waterfall! Several options open up, depending on the flow of the water; either we pass a large dry rappel with as a backdrop this enormous turquoise water pot embedded between walls of a breathtaking ochre-reddish color, or we go on the large zip line to arrive directly in the middle of this same pot. It continues with an eight-meter jump, a last slide and we arrive at the foot of the Artigue waterfalls, a little cherry on the cake. The tributary that comes from the Estat canyon pours from the top of beautiful waterfalls where we feel small in the face of the power of the water. After a last little jump to make sure we don't regret anything, we walk to the parking lot to change.

After a day like that, nothing beats a nice cold beer! We take the opportunity to meet up around the garden table in the center of Niaux and talk about this beautiful day we just spent. Everyone has their own little story, about this moment they really loved, about this place where it was so beautiful. The Artigue canyon is a great discovery of canyoning and a superb change of scenery in the heart of Ariège. Rod is happy to be able to share with you, for a day, his lifelong passion; canyoning!

See you this summer at the Artigue canyon!

The Escales canyon, fun and wild
